If you search for "best time to move house," you'll find advice that mostly boils down to "avoid weekends and the end of the month." This is partially right. But it misses most of what actually matters for a London move specifically.

Day of the week

Friday is the most popular moving day. Solicitors tend to complete on Fridays, so everyone tries to move on Fridays. Removal companies are at their busiest — and their most expensive. If you can move Tuesday or Wednesday, you're more likely to get your first-choice slot and more likely to be someone's full focus for the day.

Weekend moves cost 25% more with most London removal companies, including ours. Saturday is the single busiest day of the week. If you have a choice, mid-week is better on both price and availability.

Monday is underrated. The weekend has cleared the roads slightly, and utility changeovers happen early enough in the week to be useful.

Time of year

July and August are peak season. Families move in summer to avoid disrupting school terms. Prices are higher, availability tighter, and the city is slower. If you're moving a three-bed with children, you often have no choice. If you don't, consider alternatives.

January is the quietest month. Post-Christmas, the property market slows and removal companies often have significant availability. Rates are sometimes lower, and the service tends to be more attentive when the diary isn't overflowing.

End of June — just before the school holidays — is almost as hectic as July itself. Book early if this is when your tenancy or completion falls.

The end-of-month problem

Tenancy agreements typically end on the last day of the month. This creates a genuine surge in demand on the last Friday of most months. If your tenancy ends on the 31st, expect availability to be tight. Book as early as you can.

Some tenants negotiate with their landlord to end the tenancy mid-month. This distributes the load and often means a cheaper move. Worth asking.

What most people don't factor in

Congestion Charge hours. Central London moves starting before 7am avoid the daily £15 charge. An early start saves money and means the streets are genuinely quieter.

Lift-booking lead times. Managed buildings often need five working days' notice to book the service lift. If your move is end-of-month on a Friday, getting the request in the previous Friday gives you more options to work with.

School run timing. A move starting at 8am in a residential area will sit in school-run traffic for the first hour. A 7am start avoids this almost entirely.
